THE JACOBITES AND FORT WILLIAM

JACOBITES
The Jacobite rising ran from 9 August 1745 to 20 April 1746.
The Jacobite rising of 1745 was an attempt to regain the British throne for Scotland.
The Jacobites attacked Fort William from in 1976 from March 20th to April 3rd. The fort was, at the time, a vital government stronghold. Despite bombarding the fort with mortars from Cow Hill, the Jacobites lacked sufficient heavy artillery to breach its walls and abandoned the siege to rejoin the main army before the fateful Battle of Culloden.

THE FORT
The town now known as Fort William has had many names, suggesting something of its strategic and political importance to the control of the Highlands.
During the Jacobite Rising of 1745, the Fort was besieged for two weeks by the Jacobite forces, from 20 March to 3 April 1746.
